A horrific scene played out in Paris, France on Monday as a fire broke out at the Notre Dame Cathedral.
The iconic building was completed in the 13th century, and draws an estimated 12 million visitors per year — nearly double the Eiffel Tower, the Washington Post reports.
The ceiling of Notre Dame contained 13,000 oak trees cut in the 12th century. An entire forest, essentially.

According to The Daily Telegraph‘s James Rothwell, police sources say the fire was “started by accident and is linked to renovation works.”
