United Airlines is paving the way in the flight industry as the first US airline to offer non-binary gender booking options.
The inclusive airline announced their new booking option on March 22, 2019, in a press release on their website. Their booking customers will be able to take advantage of the new non-binary option immediately as it is currently in effect.
Besides being able to identify themselves as male (M) or female (F), customers can now choose to select undisclosed (U) or unspecified (X) as an identity classification. US Airlines also added the optional title “Mx” to all their booking channels and MileagePlus customer profiles.
To ensure that the new title designation and non-binary booking options translate into quality and respectful service when customers leave from behind their computer screen to thus interact directly with employees, the progressive airline has trained their staff in LGBT inclusivity.
With the enlisted help of The Trevor Projectand that of theHuman Rights Campaign, US Airlines’ employees learn the importance of preferred pronouns and how to interact with a diverse group of customers not to insult any one particular person who may or may not identify with traditional gender classifications.
“At the Human Rights Campaign, we believe being acknowledged as the gender you identify with is part of treating everyone with dignity and respect,” said Beck Bailey, acting director of the Workplace Equality Program. “By providing non-binary gender selection for ticketing and the gender-inclusive honorific ‘Mx’ in user profiles, United Airlines is taking an important step forward for non-binary inclusion.”

On top of the current gender non-binary booking options and Mx title designation, US Airlines is committed on continuing to grow inclusively with educational training and mindful customer care.
