Catch the special revival production of DEVIL BOYS FROM BEYOND at Evolution Theatre, central Ohio’s award-winning LGBTQQIA professional theatre company! The show runs from September 20 through September 29.
Evolution Theatre Company was founded by Executive Artist Director Mark Phillips Schwamberger in 2011. The first production the company ever produced was Devil Boys From Beyond — and now they’re bringing it back to the stage!
“Even though it’s campy, ridiculous, fun, over-the-top, off-the-wall, it has a really important message about acceptance, tolerance, homophobia and marriage equality,” Mark said, when asked about reviving Devil Boys.
Devil Boys first hit the stage in Columbus in 2011, before the Supreme Court ruling that legalized same-sex marriages. One of the show’s main themes revolves around marriage equality, which was one of the reasons the show was originally produced.
“To me, it’s still equally important and poignant, because now even though we have marriage equality, there’s all this discussion about taking away marriage equality,” Mark explained. “There’s all this backlash about it. But this show still has the same message about it, about the tolerance and homophobia and marriage equality.”
The show was first staged in 2009, two years before it reached central Ohio. “When you look at the piece, it’s still not dated. The message is still the same,” commented Mark. “Unfortunately, it’s a little sad that it isn’t dated, because of how we have gone back. That’s what makes it still a good piece to do. And it’s fun!”
It’s true that there’s more to Devil Boys than the heavy underlying messages. The show is a great time, sure to have you laughing from start to finish.
SYNOPSIS of DEVIL BOYS FROM BEYOND
Backstabbing bitches, muscle hunks and men in pumps! Wake up and smell the alien invasion in this outrageous comedy. Devil Boys from Beyond is an uproarious homage to C-movies, leading ladies, low-budget sci-films of the 50’s and the golden age of camp. Cheap in all the right ways, you’ll laugh your a#@^ probe off!
Written by Buddy Thomas and Kenneth Elliott
Original music and lyrics by Drew Fornarola
Directed by Beth Kattelman
Featuring original cast members reprising their roles: Dawn Farrell, Artie Kaufmann, Scott Risner, Leslie Robinson, Mark Phillips Schwamberger; and new cast members joining the revival production: David Harewood, Stephen Hanna, Zac Lape, Lane Schlicher
Staging a revival production always comes with its own unique set of obstacles, because the community will already have an expectation in mind. Evolution Theatre is combating that by bringing in new costumes, sets and lighting, as well as original music and a new director.
“It’s different, but it’s good different,” said Mark. “The director’s concept is going to be different than the previous director’s concept, in how they handled the campiness and the various and sundry things in the show.”
When he decided he was bringing Devil Boys back, he asked all of the original cast members to come reprise their roles. Five of the original cast members are coming back.
“They were so excited to come back. It was sort of like a reunion,” Mark continued. “But even though it was like a reunion, the new people feel just as connected with everybody.”
Connecting the old with the new, the past with the present, is really the power of theatre, after all. Devil Boys From Beyond is definitely a don’t-miss show!
