Grindr could be sharing your location and sexual orientation with thousands of advertisers

Gay dating app Grindr has been accused of unlawfully sharing its users’ personal data with thousands of advertising partners. This includes detailed information about its users sexual orientation and location, according to a new investigation from the Norwegian Consumer Council (NCC). Along with four other ad-tech companies, the NCC accused Grindr of being “out of control” with regards to its profiling of customers. “Every time you open an app like Grindr, advertisement networks get your GPS location, device identifiers and even the fact that you use a gay dating app,”...

It was “inspired by the personal ads in On Our Backs, a women-run erotica magazine of the 80s and 90s. The personals were written by lesbians and detailed their desires and romantic requirements.” Kelly Rakowski, founder of the lesbian culture instagram account h_e_r_s_t_o_r_y, asked her followers to post personal ads to connect with each other, inspired by the On Our Backs ads. The...

New dating app for trans people aims to replace Craigslist personals

The co-founder of a dating app for trans people has defended its use of ‘cis passing’ models and the terms ‘shemale’ and ‘tranny’ in the app’s title. Transdr launched on 24 March after Craigslist shutdown its personals site. The website closed the popular personals page after the US Senate passed the ‘FOSTA’ bill. FOSTA now allows victims of sex trafficking to sue the websites that facilitated their abuse. After three months of development Sean Kennedy and his team launched Transdr, which is a ‘Tinder-like app for trans people’. Kennedy said...
