Billy Porter served feathers, diamonds and a 14-yard train at the Golden Globes 2019 and honestly, we don’t know why anybody else even bothers at this point.
The category was white party at the pearly gates, with Porter a vision in white satin and diamonds on the Golden Globes red carpet.
The Pose actor wore a bedazzled tuxedo complete with a feathered train by designer Alex Vinash, which he styled with a $2 million 40-carat diamond necklace by Tiffany & Co.
“This is not a sitting oufit – this is a standing outfit,” he told reporters, adding that the colour symbolised “peace, hope and new beginnings.”
“The world has gone absolutely mad,” Porter explained.
“When we started to think about what I would wear today, the first appearance of the new decade, we decided to go all white.”
Porter’s tuxedo was a sequel of sorts to the now-legendary tuxedo ballgown that he wore to last year’s Oscars.
“It’s interesting that people now always expect Billy to be in a dress, so we’re having a lot of fun figuring out how we can make menswear absolutely fabulous and just as fantastic and opulent as womenswear,” his stylist Sam Ratelle told The Hollywood Reporter ahead of the ceremony.
Porter’s suit was embellished with 4,000 Swarovski crystals and took more than three months and 465 hours to make
Never one to live by Chanel’s “take off the last thing you put on” edict, he paired the two-piece with heeled satin boots custom-made by Sandra Choi for Jimmy Choo, a mirrored cigarette box bag with crystal-covered chain by Emm Kuo and of course, more diamonds.
As well as his Tiffany necklace, Porter wore a number of diamond rings, bangle bracelets and a $46,500 dragonfly brooch by the luxury jeweller.
Ratelle said that the brooch was “very special because of its meaning”, explaining that it represented “change, transformation, adaptability, and self-realisation”.
“It’s also a regal look,” he added. “There’s no monarchy here in the United States but it’s one of the most opulent and high-profile televised events in the world, so you have to show off in a certain way!”
Porter was nominated for best performance by an actor in a television series at the Golden Globes, which he lost to Succession’s Brian Cox.
