Thousands take to the streets in Glasgow for Mardi Gla Pride

Thousands of people took to the streets in Glasgow over the weekend to celebrate LGBTI rights.

The Mardi Gla Pride saw an estimated 7,000 marching through the streets of Scotland’s biggest city on Saturday (20 July).

Marchers made their way along Kelvin Way to Sauchiehall Street, Blythswood Street and West George Street. The march eventually ended in George Square.

This is fhr first of two LGBTI Pride marches due to take place in Glasgow this year.

For both, this year’s event holds special significance. 2019 marks the 50-year anniversary of the Stonewall Riots ni New York.

The Stonewall Riots are widely considered to have been a fundamental milestone in the modern-day LGBTI rights movement.

‘Glasgow will be a sea of rainbow colours’

The Glasgow City Council chambers on the far side of George Square was flying a raibow flag – one with a special importance.

The flag recently retunred from New York after having been parded during the World Pride Parade by a delegation from the British embassy.

The flag was take to New York by Will Labate, the New York-born chairman of this year’s Mardi Gla Pride organizers, the Glasgow LGBT Co-op.

‘It was an amazing honour to have taken the pride flag to my other home city New York where it was proudly carried in front of four million spectators watching World Pride,’ Labate said according to BBC News.

‘Glasgow will be a sea of rainbow colours as thousands of people march in Glasgow’s Pride,’ he added.

The Glagow LGBT Co-op are seperate organizers from last year’s Pride event which took place in Kelvingrove Park.

Glasgow’s 2018 Pride event was plagued by ticked issues during a post march festival.

Hundreds of people with tickets were denied access to the event, for which orgnizwers offered refunds and apologies. The Pride Glasgow CEO later resigned.

The orgainzers of this event will hold another Pride event on 17 August.
