Verizon’s Commitment to the LGBT Community in Columbus and Nationwide

When it comes to diversity, corporations are often asked to represent. That means internally and externally. Nationwide, and here in Columbus, we’re proud of our commitment to the LGBT community.
Verizon resources include the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Employees of Verizon & Allies Employee Resource Group — which we call Globe. I’m a Columbus-based employee member of this group, which is an essential partner in the company’s ongoing efforts to foster an inclusive workplace and build strategic partnerships.
This year, Verizon will be present at more than 25 Pride parades and festivals across the U.S. — including here in Columbus. These events are a great way to celebrate how far we’ve come, and also highlight how much more we can do.
For an ongoing commitment to diversity and inclusion, it helps that Verizon has a credo that spells out in simple terms Who We Are. The credo states “We embrace diversity and personal development not only because it’s the right thing to do, but also because it’s smart business.”
This is a fundamental principle of who we are — and how we work. One way we live this ideal is by implementing business practices that support workplace equality. As our Senior Vice President and Chief Talent and Diversity Officer Magda Yrizarry explains: “It’s about employees, customers, suppliers and partners. It’s about ensuring an environment for people of all different backgrounds to contribute, grow and thrive.”
Verizon, which can confirm its workplace commitment, is constantly improving. Here are some important numbers:
- 59 percent of our employees represent workplace diversity;
- 6 of 12 board of director members are women or people of color;
- And $25 billion has been spent with a diverse supplier pool since 2011.
Having diverse suppliers in our supply chain is a business imperative because it affords us diversity of thoughts, ideas, values and innovation that drives our business forward. Our Premier Supplier Academy program provides educational, technical and business skills training. It also offers one-on-one mentoring, networking events and individualized strategies designed to further our commitment to increasing business opportunities for diverse suppliers.
Verizon continues to demonstrate leadership by reinforcing our commitment to policies important to our employee community — such as inclusive HR benefits for same-sex couple adoption. And we continue to take the lead joining the Human Rights Campaign’s Equality is Our Business statement, expressing opposition to discriminatory legislation.
But we’re not stopping there. Every employee who participates in our company-wide initiative is encouraged to speak up — and participate. As we start this year’s Pride season, we celebrate Verizon and our employees as champions for LGBT rights every day.
